Staff from a Halesowen school met Prince Phillip to mark them being given the thumbs-up to run Duke of Edinburgh awards.

Windsor High School headteacher Keith Sorrell, deputy headteacher Jacqui Grace and teachers Ian Watt and Linda Baker went to St James's Palace in London to mark the move.

The school has been running the awards for 18 years but had always had to use an agency - now it can run them in-house.

Ian said: "He was a very nice gentleman - very much like old Charlie - exactly the same traits.

"We were told not to shake his hand too tight because he has arthritis.

"We have been runnning the awards for 18 years but decided to go on our own."

While at the palace the Windsor staff witnessed 400 gold awards being given out.

At the moment pupils can only do bronze and silver awards but the move means when the new sixth form starts pupils will beable to achieve their gold awards.
