Meet Sergeant Colin Gallier the new Neighbourhood Sergeant for Cradley Heath and Old Hill.

The new sergeant has taken over from Sgt Joel Morgan who will be taking over the Rowley Regis area.

Sgt Gallier has been an officer with West Midlands Police for the past seven years and has recently been supervising a neighbourhood support team in Rowley Regis.

Speaking about his new job Sgt Gallier said: "I really have some hard work to do to gain the level of local knowledge that Joel has but with his support and help from the existing neighbourhood team I am genuinely looking forward to the challenges and the opportunity to make a difference in the area.

"I will be focusing on reducing both crime and anti-social behaviour, with police working alongside our partners and also the local community."

Handing over the reigns, Sgt Morgan, who has covered Cradley Heath and Old Hill, for the past few years, said: "I am sorry to leave the neighbourhood as it has been a great area to work and I have got to know a lot of people, some of whom have also become friends.

"I do accept that it's time for a change.

"I'm still working at Old Hill but looking after the Rowley area.

"I know that I am handing over responsibility for Cradley Heath and Old Hill to someone who will do a good job for the local community."

Fantastic..our local officers are brilliant and doing a great job for us.. They are always out and about on their bikes and do their best to help if we have a problem..always make time to listen to us.. Keep up the good work Old Hill Police!

Fantastic? I can only assume you live in one of the area's more salubrious domiciles. It's business as usual for the anti social folk that patrol my neighbourhood at night.

Still, it is good to see Joel will be working in Old Hill. It means he will get home nice and early as they conveniently close our local police station every evening.

I had the pleasure of meeting Sgt Gallier at a local residents meeting recently and he certainly had the right attitude and a zero tolerance belief in respect of crime and anti social behaviour. I hope he can also 'walk the walk'.

The area needs a lot of work:

1.) Police Officers on Bicycles are a reassuring sight but can they realistically respond to the youths who carry out anti-social behaviour, especially when said youths are on mopeds and illegal mini-motos?

2.) Sandwell Council's Anti-Social Behaviour hotline closes around 8pm, well before the perpetrators come out, meaning that the only action victims can take is to call the police who are likely to be busy with more serious incidents.

The youths that hang around the streets each night do not have any regard to who's lives they are affecting...The pensioner wanting to go to bed at 10pm unable to do so because kids are screaming outside his bungalow, the moms with children who are trying to get their little ones to bed amidst screams and swearing from outside their childs bedroom window, the couple who have saved for ages to afford their own home only to have it ruined by kids who are 'bored'.

I wish all the best to the new Sergeant but appeal to him to put police officers on the streets after 9pm as this is when the problems begin.

I'd agree about the yobs and ASB..but what are parents doing to take responsibility for their own kids..often nothing but to get them out from under their feet! As regards the police station - the front office is closed to the public..but that's not the fault of the local cops..but their bosses at HQ. I do know that there are officers working from Old Hill Police Station 24/7 though - which is more important than having the front office open..!

The parents, lamentably, are no better behaved than their errant offspring in the vast majority of occasions.

I see lots of police on bikes, conveniently cycling away from trouble often.

My partner and I have finally given up and have put our house up for sale. We dont want our 10 month old son to grow up with the ambient noise of swearing, mini moto's, bottles being smashed and car alarms.

To say the police had 'lost the streets' in Old Hill would be over dramatic but it would also infer that they owned the streets to begin with.

Come on folks..be positive..this is area is NOT bad..I can take you to far worse places.. The yobs just need to be stopped, one way or another.. Be fair on what we expect of the cops..it's not just up to them to sort the problems, what about the council, schools, parents, and US the local residents - we need to stand up and be counted too!!

It would be far easier to judge the levity with which you are treating the issue if I knew the street/estate where you lived.

Last Friday, I had reason to contact the Police. The perfectly pleasant woman I spoke to explained, and this is not a fabrication, they record the calls im sure, so this could be backed up, that they didnt have any police to send about anti social behaviour. The woman went on to agree with me that it would be a perfect night to commit a crime and she then stated that they 'dont have any idea how to deal with anti social behaviour'.

I will admit to being at a low ebb following this not altogether shocking admission. I tried to call the above 'New Sgt On Beat' left 2 messages, was promised a callback both times and havent received one.

However, I am now at ease. In the spirit of standing up and being counted, next time we have a repeat of last Fridays performance (probably this Friday) I shall give you a call, and you can drive over and politely ask them to desist.

I can assure you now that the result of your amazingly naive attitude to this would be you doing quite the opposite of standing up. Furthermore, the only thing likely to be counted would be your teeth....on the pavement.

These people cant be reasoned with. I hear them shouting at each other at 4am outside my bedroom window quite often, they barely speak English. So in order to stand up and be counted as residents, we need to be quite prepared to expect and presumably defend ourselves against violence, which is the very last thing I would hope that the Police would condone.

It is very easy to make the right noises when you arent beset on all sides by yobs, and you are right, there are far worse places. You dont need to take me to them, I have seen them. Does that make a lesser level acceptible and something to be put up with?

Counsellor Ann Shackleton certainly goes to great pains to express her empathy, then toddles off to her quiet street in Halesowen.
