Two derelict Blackheath shops described by traders as "atrocious eyesores" are finally set to be demolished.

The former Cramer Flowers and Jack's Shoe Repair, both boarded up and fenced off in Halesowen Street, will be knocked down in weeks after bulldozing began on Monday.

Sandwell Council had originally promised to tear the buildings down in December but this was delayed by problems locating the owners of two small areas of backland on the site.

Now the council have decided to go ahead and clear buildings on land they own.

Councillor Bob Badham, cabinet member for regeneration, admitted the process had taken longer than expected.

Cllr Badham said: "There have been a number of underlying problems which made the situation more complex.

"Now we will clear the front of the site before turning our attentions to any remaining issues.

"We were determined to get that area tidied up as quickly as possible but you don't know what complications will arise until you start this kind of thing."

Both premises have been derelict for more than four years. When rebuilt they are expected to house businesses displaced by the town's new library development.

Clive Pettipher, who owns Pets Pantry on the opposite side of the street, said he was pleased the site would now be cleared but believes the council should have acted sooner.

Clive said: "This has dragged on for far too long. The properties look terrible and are on one of the main routes to Sainsbury's.

"You would have thought the council could have put a fence up, they should never have let it get to this state."
