Unearthing the heroes’ stories
A determined history enthusiast is making sure the fallen heroes of Halesowen are never forgotten.
Michael Green has spent the last decade researching the lives of more than 400 First World War soldiers whose names are engraved on the town's war memorial.
The quantity surveyor has trawled the internet and public libraries in order to uncover the stories behind the men, from their birthplace and profession to military career and death.
Michael, whose own father fought during the conflict, revealed he first had the idea after recognising a friend's grandfather's name on the memorial.
He said: "I realised that in a few years nobody would realise who these men were and what they had died for.
"I decided to research as much as possible and record it for relatives or anyone who might be interested.
"It has been a tough task and I have had to fit it in between work but it has been worth it."
The memorial, which stands in the Halesowen parish churchyard, also contains the names of men from Blackheath and Rowley Regis.
Michael revealed he still has around 30 names to research, and is hoping to get the full list published at some point.
He added: "It is probably too late even now to find information on some of the men but I am determined to try.
"I uncovered several interesting stories during my research and I am sure there are plenty more to be told."
Anyone who has information on one of Halesowen's fallen First World War soldiers can contact Michael on 0121 5504487.
